NOTE FROM SAVEABUNNY FOUNDER, Marcy Schaaf

I am thrilled to share with you the photos and story of the Oakland Animal Services Beautification Project sponsored by SaveABunny. Phase One is completed!

The photos below just can't capture the richness and vitality of an exquisite mosaic created by Jingletown artist, Kim Larson and a gorgeous painted mural, by SaveABunny volunteer and artist Gael Antognini

A mosaic and painted mural project at an animal shelter has been a dream goal of mine for a long time. Animal shelters are rarely considered places where beauty is found. The animals, volunteers and staff at animal shelters---especially at a public, urban shelter like Oakland Animal Services, typically are subjected to a lot of stress and have few resources. The same is true for a volunteer run, nonprofit rescue group like SaveABunny that specializes in helping rescue, rehabilitate and rehome abandoned, abused and neglected pet bunnies---the nation's third most frequently euthanized animals.

Art for the Oakland Animal Services mosaic project needed to be donated---created out of the willingness to help and a love for animals. We just couldn't afford to pay someone to do the work. Since I am a fellow mosaic artist (with little time left over after rescue work to create!) I have an extensive selection of glass, ceramic and all kinds of tiles I've collected over the years. Kim and I had a great time sorting through all my tiles for just the right ones!

Gael and Kim each designed and installed their own professional, artistic creations---donating their time and talents, which otherwise could have cost us in the thousands of dollars. Truly incredible and what a generosity of spirit!

This collaborative volunteer effort between a rescue group, a shelter and a community artist is both progressive and very unusual in the animal welfare field. As such, this project is part of two very important presentations I am giving in the next few months. In April 2009, I'll be speaking at the Humane Society of the United States Expo in Las Vegas ---the largest animal care conference in the world. The Expo attracts several thousand national and international attendees. On March 3, 2009 I was a speaker at the California Animal Care Conference sponsored by the California Veterinary Medical Association, The State Humane Association of California and The California Animal Control Directors Association.

Stay tuned for Phase Two of The Oakland Animal Services Beautification Project!

A Day In The Life Of Rescue

Sometimes people tell me that they envy that I have found a way to do what I am passionate about. I often tell people not to glamorize rescue work , because in fact it is much harder than the Fortune 100 work I used to do. REscue work is emotionally draining and often thankless work, unless of course you take in account the gratitude of the animals whose lives have been saved. That naturally makes it all worthwhile in a day that can be filled with incredible ups and downs. In rescue work I see the best and the worst of people.

Event Date:
2007-07-14 10:30 to 16:30
Location:
SaveABunny Foster and Education Center (Mill Valley)
Description:

SaveABunny is proud to offer a leisurely day of learning and luxury for you and your bunnies.

Please join the highly esteemed Dr. Carolynn Harvey at SaveABunny for a small, hands-on Clicker training class.

Many people are aware that dogs and cats can be clicker trained. Did you know rabbits also can learn bunny tricks through clicker training? Many behavior issues are also remedied through the positive reinforcement method of clicker training.

Join us to learn this revolutionary way to communicate with your rabbit. It's also as close as you will get to having them "do what you want them to do!"

Bunnies love to show us how smart they are, and many respond very well to "clicker" commands. Come learn the basics of clicker training and take home new tricks to practice with your bunny or significant other...

OOPS! Did I actually say that aloud?!
hehehe

Space is very limited, so an RSVP with non refundable $50 deposit is required.

When: Saturday, July 14 from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm
Cost: $100 for the day and...

We'll supply Dr. Harvey, clickers to take home, a light, vegan lunch for humans, free admission to our Summer party and loving rescued bunnies on which to practice your clicker training skills. You'll then be experienced to show your own bunny who's the boss (in a fun and loving way of course!

Please add $20 if you'd like to bring your bunny. We will make a comfy space with yummy greens for him or her to hang out while you play at our Summer party!

Don't miss this fun and informative class!

Please RSVP for directions.
